Neurostimulation for Pain

Innovative Treatments for Spine Pain Management

When chronic spine-related pain interferes with your life and can't be treated with medication or other noninvasive therapies, turn to Commonwealth Pain & Spine! Our pain clinic offers effective neurostimulation treatments, including spinal cord and dorsal root ganglion stimulation. The treatments involve implanting a stimulator device that delivers low-voltage electrical currents to disrupt pain signals and prevent them from reaching the brain.

Who Could Use Neurostimulation?

Chronic pain requires continuous management and interventional therapies like neurostimulation. Our team may recommend one of the following treatments, depending on your condition:

  • Spinal Cord Stimulation: This treatment option is for conditions such as neuralgia, post-laminectomy syndrome, or complex regional pain syndrome.
  • Dorsal Root Ganglion Stimulation: This can benefit those with chronic pain developed after surgeries like hernia repair or total hip or knee replacement.

To find out if neurostimulation is right for you, reach out to the Commonwealth Pain & Spine team. Our dual-board certified physicians will evaluate your condition and determine if you qualify for this innovative treatment!

The Power of Neurostimulation in Pain Relief

Neurostimulation offers a beacon of hope for those who have long battled with chronic pain, providing a path toward reclaiming their quality of life. Patients often report a range of positive outcomes, including:

  • Reduced pain levels by upwards of 50%
  • Decreased reliance on pain medications
  • Improved ability to perform daily activities and engage in physical therapy
  • Enhanced sleep quality due to reduced pain-related sleep disturbances

Our skilled professionals will evaluate your condition, craft a tailored treatment strategy, and provide ongoing assistance for effective pain management.

What You Can Expect from Neurostimulation Treatments

Getting started with our pain clinic is simple. Fill out a self-referral form and our team will contact your PCP to obtain a referral from them. Once we have all the information we need, we’ll reach out to you for an appointment!

Here is what is typically involved with the neurostimulation process:

  • Consultation: During your first visit, our dual-board certified physicians will thoroughly assess your medical history and discuss your pain. This evaluation will help determine if neurostimulation is right for you.
  • Trial Period: Before proceeding with the complete implantation, you'll undergo a one-week trial period. During this time, your surgeon will attach the stimulator without complete implantation to assess the effectiveness of the treatment in managing your pain.
  • Implantation Surgery: If the trial period proves successful, your surgeon will schedule you for minimally invasive, outpatient implantation surgery. Depending on your specific treatment plan, the stimulator device will be implanted in your hip or lower back, with wires connecting to your spinal cord or dorsal root ganglion.
  • Customized Pain Relief: To ensure you receive targeted pain relief when needed most, an external control system using Bluetooth® technology allows you to adjust the electrical currents in real-time.
  • Follow-Up: After your implantation surgery, we'll schedule regular follow-up appointments to monitor your progress, adjust your device settings if necessary, and provide ongoing support. Our goal is to help you achieve optimal pain relief and improve your overall quality of life.
