Knee Pain Viscosupplementation

Hyaluronic Acid Injections for Pain Relief

Knee pain often comes with stiffness and pain due to joint damage and poor lubrication. The interventional pain specialists and dual-board certified physicians at Commonwealth Pain & Spine offer viscosupplementation. This is the process of using hyaluronic acid injections to ease these painful joints. Hyaluronic acid is a natural fluid in joints and tissues throughout your body, so adding more to your knee joint can improve lubrication, reducing inflammation and stiffness.

Who Can Benefit from Viscosupplementation for Knee Pain?

Knee pain is often caused by ligament injuries, overuse, and osteoarthritis, where joint use wears away articular cartilage, exposing bones and causing them to rub together. Viscosupplementation may benefit those experiencing common symptoms such as:

  • Swelling and stiffness in one or both knees
  • A grating sensation when you move your knee
  • Pain while walking, sitting, or resting

Viscosupplementation is a great option for those struggling with pain affecting daily activities. Let Commonwealth Pain & Spine take care of your knees so you can focus on what matters most.

Find Knee Pain Relief with Viscosupplementation

Dealing with knee pain is no easy task. It can affect daily activities and limit your enjoyment of life. Viscosupplementation can help you regain some of what was lost. Some of the possible effects of a viscosupplementation procedure include:

  • Hyaluronic acid enhances joint lubrication for smoother, less painful movement
  • Reduces joint inflammation, offering relief around the knee
  • The natural components in injections lower the risk of adverse reactions
  • Many patients experience extended pain relief, especially with other treatments

Commonwealth Pain & Spine offers several noninvasive treatments to ease pain and improve function. Physical therapy, medication, and steroid joint injections can all help.

What the Process of Viscosupplementation Looks Like

Kickstart your pain relief journey on your own by filling out a self-referral. We'll connect with your PCP to gather information and a referral and reach out to you as soon as possible to book an appointment to explore your treatment options.

Here’s what you can expect during the viscosupplementation process:

  • Consultation: To understand your knee pain, your physician will discuss your medical history and conduct a physical examination to pinpoint the source of your pain. Additional imaging may be requested to determine if viscosupplementation is right for you.
  • Injection: This is an outpatient procedure, so little preparation is needed. However, if there’s any joint swelling, your physician may aspirate (remove) the excess fluid before injecting the hyaluronic acid. Your physician will inject the hyaluronic acid directly into your affected knee joint to lubricate and cushion the area.
  • Recovery: After the injection, you may feel pain, swelling, and warmth around the treated area. These symptoms usually go away in a few hours and can be managed with ice packs. Avoid strenuous activities like jogging or heavy lifting for at least two days to prevent strain on your knee.
  • Relief and Follow-Up: It may take several weeks to notice viscosupplementation’s effects, but many patients experience months of pain relief after the injections. If you get good results, you can have additional treatments for knee pain after six months.
